Backup & Disaster Recovery
Moving from hosted Exchange servers to Microsoft Office 365 frees IT service providers from the hassles of managing application servers—and dramatically reduces worries about system downtime. However, it doesn’t absolve service providers (or in-house IT pros) of all responsibility when it comes to Exchange data protection.
In this two-part blog series, we’re exploring the top seven reasons you need to back up Office 365 data. You can read about the first three reasons here. Today, we will discuss reasons four through seven.
- External threats
Every month, we read more headlines about malware, viruses, and hacks. Nearly two-thirds of cyberbreach victims are small- or medium-sized businesses. It’s really not a question of if your customers will be hit, but when. And it’s just as certain they will call you for help. If a virus has caused data to be deleted, and the recycle bin has been emptied, the only way you can save the day is by restoring from an external third-party backup.
- Legal and compliance requirements
It’s hard to predict when legal issues may require in-place or litigation holds on data. Industry-specific regulatory requirements can be strict, but at least they are somewhat more predictable. In either scenario, you must upgrade to the Enterprise E3 or ES editions in order to get data protection for litigation holds from Microsoft. If you’ve chosen to use the more affordable E1 edition, you’ll need to resort to a third-party backup solution to help you out.
- Your customers’ experience
Who would you rather have your customers rely on in their hour of need—Microsoft or you? If recovery depends on filing a Microsoft support ticket and waiting, you’re no longer in control of the situation, and your ability to satisfy your customers’ needs may be impacted. However, if you have your own backup solution in place, you’re in control.
There are several reasons your customers may choose the more expensive E3 or ES editions of Office 365, such as the included applications. But if budgets are tight and cloud-based email is all they need, the combination of an E1 subscription and an external backup solution you provide can be a powerful money-saving alternative.
