Gain unmatched visibility into customer networks with comprehensive network QoS software

Monitoring ever-expanding networks of diverse devices is one of the biggest challenges MSPs face today. When scaling your business to accommodate thousands or even tens of thousands of devices and applications, it’s easy to get lost in network complexity and get distracted by non-critical traffic.

SolarWinds® N-central® is an enterprise-grade Remote Monitoring and Management (RMM) platform that offers critical visibility into customer networks with the NetPath™ feature.

NetPath picks up where traceroute ends. Its advanced probing allows it to detect network paths from the source server to the destination, regardless of if they’re on-premises, in the cloud, or in hybrid IT environments. This deep visibility allows you to better identify traffic types for more accurate Quality of Service (QoS) monitoring.

Unlock more granular network analysis by digging into node information

Unlock more granular network analysis by digging into node information

Achieving a comprehensive overview of customer network paths is only the beginning of QoS monitoring. To reliably deliver services to your customers, getting a full picture of the performance of critical network paths is key. MSPs should be able to easily see and understand the network information uncovered by SolarWinds N-central in order to perform efficient network analysis.

NetPath visually maps the network path and collects information about the external nodes in a network path, including packet loss, latency, as well as company and contact information. This helps MSPs better understand end-to-end performance and drill down to establish which node/hop is impacting network performance.

Troubleshoot more effectively with 24/7 QoS monitoring, history, thresholds, and alerts

Troubleshoot more effectively with 24/7 QoS monitoring, history, thresholds, and alerts

When it comes to troubleshooting, knowing when the problem occurred is just as important as knowing where the problem occurred. NetPath facilitates 24/7 QoS monitoring, tracking every hop in the network path in near real time. It also saves historical data of path performance, which enables efficient troubleshooting. To drill down on an issue that occurred at a specific time, simply dig into the incremental timeline of path history from the past 30 days.

The NetPath feature also facilitates more proactive troubleshooting by alerting you to outages before your users even notice. SolarWinds N-central uses QoS performance metrics and network connectivity details to understand performance thresholds for your customers’ networks. Once any of these thresholds for packet loss or latency have been crossed, a targeted alert can be sent so that you can start resolving performance issues before your users even notice.

Provide better service to customers with a QoS monitoring tool that helps optimize connectivity

QoS monitoring and network management are about making sure that MSPs can deliver a consistently high quality of service to customers. If your customers are losing productivity due to dropped calls and choppy video conferences, you need to know.

With SolarWinds N-central and its NetPath feature, keeping a watchful eye on your customers’ experience is easy, regardless of location. This network QoS software is designed to measure latency to help you understand how long it takes a packet to get to its destination. With this capability, you can be proactive. Instead of reacting to customer feedback on performance issues, you can rely on NetPath to tell you if a customer’s ability to use an app has been negatively affected. QoS monitoring capabilities help you prioritize and direct network traffic for uninterrupted connectivity that helps keep customers satisfied.

Streamline time-consuming processes with powerful automation

Streamline time-consuming processes with powerful automation

Providing remote IT support for diverse customer networks with hundreds of endpoints can be challenging because there are so many moving parts. MSPs must negotiate network discovery, cybersecurity, configuration, compliance reporting, alerts, and more.

How can you juggle it all while maintaining a high quality of service?

Powerful layered automation capabilities make the SolarWinds N-central solution an excellent QoS monitoring tool. Onboarding, setup, maintenance, patch management, and reporting can all be automated—allowing your technicians to spend more time focusing on complex tasks. You can also create your own custom policies and apply them across devices with just a few clicks. This helps maximize consistency, reduce human error, and ensure MSPs can tackle QoS monitoring configurations as efficiently as possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does QoS mean in networking?

Quality of Service (QoS) is an umbrella term for any technology that manages network traffic to reduce jitter, latency, and packet loss.

QoS can be thought of as a form of traffic control for a network. Modern businesses must negotiate an extraordinary amount of network traffic from many different sources: business applications, video conferences, and even social media. Some of this traffic is likely more critical to the business and thus deserves priority delivery preference. QoS policies or settings can help sort network traffic and appropriately distribute network resources to ensure that tasks can be completed in a timely fashion.

What are QoS parameters?

QoS can be measured according to four parameters:

1.    Mean Opinion Score (MOS) - MOS rates voice quality according to a five-point scale, with five indicating the highest quality.
2.    Packet loss - An overextended network will start dropping packets to clear up congestion. This compromises the end user experience.
3.    Jitter - Jitter is the fluctuation in packet delivery over time, measured in milliseconds.
4.    Latency - Latency is the amount of time it takes for packets to make it to their destinations, measured in milliseconds. Too much jitter or latency will degrade video and call quality.

If a QoS monitoring tool indicates that packet loss, jitter, or latency are high, there are performance issues that need to be addressed.

Why is QoS monitoring important?

QoS monitoring, along with QoS policies or settings, help MSPs optimize network performance and allocate network resources responsibly. However, implementing QoS settings is not a one-time task. MSPs and system administrators must routinely monitor QoS and the metrics most relevant to it within their network to maintain a high quality of service.

Benefits of QoS and QoS monitoring include:

●    Reducing latency and jitter.
●    Preventing packet loss.
●    Enhancing cybersecurity.
●    Managing network traffic.
●    Reducing operating costs.
●    Improving user experience.

A QoS monitoring tool can help you more efficiently unlock these benefits to deliver more consistent and reliable service to your customers.

How does QoS work?

MSPs can implement QoS in three principal ways:

1.    Best Effort - With this QoS model, all packets have the same priority and there is no guarantee that all packets will be delivered. This is the simplest approach but doesn’t offer much in terms of network optimization.
2.    Integrated Services (IntServ): With IntServ, applications must request a resource reservation (like bandwidth) for each data flow before sending the data, and the network devices will determine if there are enough resources available to grant the request. This approach isn’t very scalable and takes up a lot of network resources.
3.    Differentiated Services (DiffServ): With DiffServ, network traffic is divided into classes and assigned Differentiated Services Code Point (DSCP) values. Traffic types with high DSCPs always go through first. This approach is easy to scale and by far the most common of the three.

What can’t you do with QoS?

QoS can help ensure that you’re using your network bandwidth as efficiently as possible, but it cannot increase your network bandwidth. QoS settings do, however, streamline network traffic and make your communications smoother, which is often mistaken for an increase in bandwidth.

QoS is also not a solution for idle applications that are using up bandwidth because they have been left running in the background. Eventually, these applications will use whatever resources are available, no matter how many effective QoS policies are applied.

QoS helps transmit business-critical data faster, tag packets for prioritization, and make the best use of available bandwidth. It cannot increase bandwidth or unclog network congestion on its own.

How does QoS manage your network?

QoS helps manage your network by performing actions in the following five categories:

1.    Classification - Sorting network traffic into different types and prioritizing accordingly.
2.    Congestion management - Determining how to queue classified and sorted packets.
3.    Congestion avoidance - Using QoS monitoring tools to monitor network congestion and drop low-priority packets.
4.    Shaping - Manipulating network traffic to prioritize real-time applications with traffic-shaping tools like buffers.
5.    Link efficiency - Maximizing bandwidth and reducing packet delays using Real-Time Transport Protocol header compression, Transmission Control Protocol compression, and link compression.

A QoS monitoring tool automatically negotiates these actions for you from one intuitive piece of software.
