The “3-2-1 rule” is a backup and recovery methodology that helps ensure that data is adequately protected by keeping a clean copy of your data available for recovery whenever needed. To follow the rule, MSPs must keep:
- Three copies of data—There should be three copies of all data, including production data and two backups
- Two different storage media types—Both copies of the backed up data should be kept in two different kinds of storage to reduce the risk of failure and build in redundancy. Common storage types include internal or external hard drives, removable storage drives, and the cloud.
