IT Security Risk Management
No business or organization is immune to IT security risks, and most require a sophisticated IT team to protect, backup and restore sensitive data. In a time of hyper mobility and BYO devices, firewalls and virus scans aren't enough to eradicate serious security threats. Today, managed service providers require IT management solutions that will help them gain more control over an increasingly disjointed IT landscape.
The True Cost of Information Security Risks
Businesses must be vigilant to keep their sensitive data from falling into the wrong hands. There is a wide range of advanced persistent threats, and organizations must protect against these information security risks with sophisticated technologies.
In a recent study conducted by Ponemon, a security research firm, it was found that the average cost of cybercrime is more than $7 million per organization, annually. Cyber attacks can include anything from viruses and trojans to phishing and social engineering.
According to ZD Net, "One of the most significant statistics in the Ponemon survey is the average number of days required to resolve different types of cyber attacks, which ranges from 2.6 days for viruses, worms and trojans and up to 53 days for malicious insider attacks."
Types of IT Security Risks
The SANS Institute defines IT security risks as "the harm to a process or the related information resulting from some purposeful or accidental event that negatively impacts the process or the related information."
Common types of security risks include:
- Alteration of software — an intentional deletion, modification or insertion of a software application or operating system that compromises the integrity, confidentiality or availability of data. Examples of software alteration include viruses, logic bombs, Trojan horses and trapdoors.
- Accidental disclosure — the unauthorized release of confidential data
- Acts of nature — any natural occurrence that can affect an application or system. Examples of acts of nature include earthquakes, tornadoes and hurricanes.
Although not all security risks are malicious, managed service providers must be able to quickly backup and restore their customers' data to minimize business interruptions and avoid costly mistakes.
SolarWinds MSP (formerly LOGICnow) develops information security risk management solutions that help MSPs backup, restore and better manage their customers' important files and data.
