Email Security | Safeguard Your Business
Keep Data Safe with Email Security
Email is the most widely used method for exchanging business data. But just because email is practically universal doesn’t mean that everyone knows how to use it properly. If used improperly, email can expose businesses to all kinds of threats, such as spam, phishing, spoofing and viruses.
Adopting an email security policy will help safeguard your organization and empower your users to handle their email responsibly.
What is Email Security?
Email security is a broad term that describes the steps necessary to safeguard an email account — i.e., who can access it and see the content. Email security allows individuals and organizations to protect email accounts and data from unsolicited, untrustworthy and malicious email messages from delivery to a user’s inbox.
What Should Email Security Guard Against?
Because email is so widely used, it's by far the most exploited channel for attacks.
Cyber threats are constantly evolving. Look no further than Target. The retailer was hit by a malware attack on its point-of-sale system that compromised approximately 110 million customer records. While this event made headlines, it's only one example of the myriad threats out there today.
There have been countless email scams that have cost victims hundreds of millions of dollars.
Look for protection against the following threats when your business considers an email security solution.
Spam is unsolicited electronic “junk” mail. It's usually some form of advertising. It clogs up inboxes and squanders precious bandwidth. And it can contain nasty viruses that can infect your computer without even opening an attachment.
A Symantec survey found that the amount of spam sent is the lowest it's been than more than 10 years — about 50% of all emails sent in June 2015. The survey found that malware is on the rise, however, suggesting that cyber criminals are getting more sophisticated.
Usually thousands of spam messages are sent from one location. But as spam filters have become more effective, it's become easier prevent spam from appearing in your inbox if it routinely comes from the same source.
But spammers have gotten smarter, too. So instead of blasting inboxes with thousands of messages from one computer, they're spreading the wealth. Now spammers will send a few spam message from thousands of locations. This makes it harder to block the emails. This is known as snowshoe spam.
Spammers have become so smart, they'll even tie the spam to email addresses to which you've subscribed (such as newsletters). These messages can also be used to carry out phishing or malware attacks.
Phishing takes spam to a new — and darker — level. Instead of simply junking up your email account with unwanted messages, phishing involves someone posing as a legitimate business in order to steal valuable personal information. Like the name suggests, phishers throw out a lot of "bait" (thousands upon thousands of emails) with the hope that a few unlucky people will bite.
Here's an example. A scammer sends a message that appears to be from your bank. The message says your account has been locked and in order to reset it, you need to provide your name, phone number, address, username, password and Social Security number. You click the link, fill out the form and submit it thinking you've unlocked your online account. In reality, you've just given the scammer the keys to your identity.
Phishing scams look convincing. The messages appear to be authentic and even include logos and graphics ripped off from the companies the scammer is posing as.
Symantec notes in a report that phishing attacks have decreased in volume recently. Experts contend that doesn't indicate attackers are giving up. They're just trying different tactics. The same report noticed that malicious software (malware) is on the rise.
Computer software is meant to make your life better by helping you with daily tasks or by entertaining you. Malware isn't helpful or entertaining. It infects your machine and starts doing things that benefit the person who designed it or sent it to you, usually without your knowledge.
Have you ever clicked on a email link and noticed that annoying pop-up ads start showing up everywhere? That's an example of malware. It can be designed to steal personal information and crash your computer. Once it's on your machine, it can be extremely difficult to find and remove.
Malware takes several different forms:
- Spyware – Tracks your online visits and sends personal information to third parties.
- Adware – Causes invasive ads to appear when you log on to the Internet.
- Browser hijacker – Takes over your browser and changes your settings.
- Virus – Spreads across computers and causes damage wherever it goes.
