SEO for Your MSP Website - Part 1
If you're planning to put up a website for your MSP or IT Support Company and just have people stumble across it, think again.
That might have worked back in 1995 when there were about 10 pages out there on the Internet, but today competition for viewers and eyeballs on your web page is tougher than ever.
One of the best way to draw viewers (and potential customers) to your website is by increasing its SEO visibility.
Finding the Right Keywords
SEO, for those of you who have been living under a cyber-rock, refers to Search Engine Optimization.This is the process of making your page more friendly to search engines so that it can be found easier.
Let's say you're running a Managed Service Provider in Carl's Corner, Texas. You want your business to be found by users on Google, so you sit down and draw up a list of "keywords" or phrases that users will type into the seach box. Here's just a few keyword combinations you could come up with:
- carl's corner computer support
- carl's corner computer repair
- carl's corner tech support
- carl's corner texas it services
That's just a small sample of some possible keyword combinations. But you get the idea. Think like a user. Someone looking to get their computer repaired locally, in Carl's Corner, will most likely type in the name of the location as part of their search.
Now that you've got your keywords nailed down, you'll need to incorporate these into your webpages.
SEO on Your MSP Webpages
Books and books have been written on this subject, and this article certainly isn't going to do more than touch upon the surface of SEO, but here are some of the most important SEO tricks you can use to make sure your pages are seen by the right people:
TITLE - Be sure to put your keyword phrase in the title of your web page. When you pull the page up in a browser, you should be able to see the keyphrase or words across the top of the title bar.
META Tags - These are the tags labeled "<META>" located in the header of your HTML. These tell the search engines information about your site, such as what it's about and some of the keywords relating to your site. Always make sure these are filled out with relevant information.
KEYWORDS - You'll also want to have your keywords placed strategically through your website and pages. A general rule of thumb is that you want to have a keyword placement on your page of about 3 to 5 percent. There are a number of plugins for CMS systems that will help you keep track of these. Keywords are important in your pages, but they're not the end all SEO solution that some people would have you believe.
The one thing you want to avoid when it comes to keywords though, is what's known as "keyword stuffing". That's where you repeat the keywords or phrase over and over on the page. Search engines, particularly Google, don't like this and will penalize your website with bad rankings.
