Are you social?
As an MSP, one effective way to build yourself a strong following on Social Media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ (Don't forget about our Google+ and Twitter accounts, either! - Ed), is to consistently provide your followers with good quality and relevant content.
Many MSP’s fall into the trap of believing this content has to be of their own creation. Understandable, but not many MSP’s I know have the time or resources to dedicate to producing content on a full-time basis.
By far the better way is to become a curator of content – filtering and aggregating good relevant content from other sources.
This is a lot easier than you think. Chances are that, like me, you read a lot of interesting articles by others on a day-to-day basis that would also be relevant to your intended audience, including clients and potential clients. Therefore it’s unlikely that you’ll be short of content to share, but how best to share this content with your followers without overwhelming them?
We’ve all seen examples of businesses where the “Social Media Guru” for that brand has woken up and pumped out a ton of links in one go. Whilst those links may well be of interest to followers, they tend to get ignored due to the overwhelming quantity of them.
Instead, drip feed your content to your audience throughout the day.
Social Media tools such a Tweetdeck and HootSuite have the ability to schedule status updates for Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn – but if you have a lot of interesting content, when and what you’ve scheduled becomes confusing.
This is where the social media tool Buffer comes in to play.
Buffer is a free app that allows you to create a buffer (the clue is in the name, eh?) of up to 10 updates for Twitter or Facebook over 3 days - more are available in a Premium version - which will then be posted over the course of a day at pre-defined times of your choosing.
As well as the Buffer web-site, there are plug-ins for your web-browser to enable one-click buffering of interesting content you find, and you can also e-mail yourself at a special Buffer email address with content you want scheduled – useful if you find interesting content on the iPad or another mobile device.
As well as integrating with your favourite URL shortening tools – such as bit.ly – Buffer also generates statistics on the links you’ve shared so that you can see how many people clicked through and re-shared those links. Very useful for analysing the type of content your followers are interested in.
Using Buffer makes sharing useful, relevant content with your Social Media audience a whole lot easier and more effectively.
Once you get into the habit of sharing relevant and interesting content as you read it, thus providing valuable information to your followers, you’ll start to build a strong following of people who are interested in what you have to share.
