I was given a great quote from a partner in Europe when I was visiting him recently, and I think it summarizes the benefits of automation pretty well. He told me, “If you do something twice, you’re learning; if you do it three or more times, you’re wasting time.” His approach is that if he does the same thing twice, he’ll look into automating it so he doesn’t have to do it a third time. While you can’t automate everything, it is important to note that quite a few things can be automated, and my goal is to help our partners automate as much as possible, and where it makes the most sense, to hopefully achieve new levels of efficiency and profitability.
Automation is no longer a luxury, but rather a basic need for any MSP.
• North American Automation Hackathon
The hackathon is currently under way and partners are submitting their best automation policies. With a top prize of $10,000, it is definitely worth submitting your automation policies to win one of the five prizes!

• Upcoming Automation Bootcamp—Advanced (for RMM and N-central®)
I have recently finished writing the advanced automation bootcamp, and we will be announcing dates for it shortly. We are planning them early to mid-November. Stay tuned for update in this blog and in emails about them.
Automation of the Week—Upgrading PowerShell
For this week’s automation, I wanted to use a policy that was submitted at the Empower Hackathon this year. Upgrading PowerShell is something partners need to do and that can be a bit of a pain. Mytech Partners have built a script to fix this issue. The script and custom service allow you to upgrade PowerShell from version 2.0 all the way up to version 5.1.
Feel free to use it, check out the link to the Cookbook article: https://success.solarwindsmsp.com/kb/solarwinds_n-central/PowerShell-Upgrade-2-0-to-5-1
As always, don’t forget to check out everything else the Cookbook has to offer www.solarwindsmsp.com/cookbook if you are interested in other automation policies, script checks, and custom services.
